Used spas hot tubs
Buying a used hot tub may sound good and the money you save could make quite a saving on a new hot tub but before you commit yourself you should go through a few checks to find out if a used hot tub sale is better than buying a new one.
Buying used spas hot tubs or Jacuzzis could be a risky business if you do not know what you are doing. And there is also the daunting task of moving it from the buyer to the location you want it to be in.
You should be able to evaluate the used hot tub to see if it a viable purchase, you also need to know where to buy them, and you need to be able to spot defects to avoid expensive repairs afterwards. The first thing is make sure you do not spend any money before you have inspected the hot tub. And make sure you have seen the hot tub in action before making any decision.
Things to take into consideration include:
- Check the wiring and how to install it.
- Repair expenses after setting up and before using.
- Your site preparation and setup of the tub
- How to move used spas hot tubs or Jacuzzi’s from one location to another.
- How to decontaminate and clean the tub before use?
When looking for a used hot tub it is best not to go to a dealer as they will do there best to sell you a new one. Buying online is impractical unless the seller is near you due to the fact you cannot inspect the spa and the cost of shipping would also be impractical. So the best place would be local to you. And the best place to start is with classified adverts in local magazines, newspapers or shops. Usually families will sell there hot tubs when moving out of the area.
What you will pay for a used spa hot tub depends on a number of factors. Like how much did the owner pay in the first place, what condition the spa is in, what additional features it has, how old is it, and does it need any repairs. Keep all this in mind when trying to get the best price that you can. Getting a used hot tub sale may take some haggling.
You should avoid any spa that has not been operated frequently and left to stand. Like other mechanical devices if left for long periods then condensation will cause corrosion to electrical components, motors shafts and pumps may also corrode and seize up if left for long periods. Seals and gaskets will age, rubber will perish and with drying out and shrinkage leaks will soon happen. If a hot tub has been left outside in direct sunlight then damage could be caused to acrylic layers and delaminating of fibreglass panels can occur. This type of damage may be irreparable. If a spa has not been sitting on a flat surface when you move it and refill it fractures can occur when it is refilled. So avoid spas that have been neglected and have the spa filled and run at its optimum settings for twenty-four hours before you do an inspection.
Used spa hot tub inspection and evaluation
Shell inspection
Carefully inspect the shell, avoid hot tubs with cracks, warping, blisters, breaks or any evidence of leaks. Repairs to a damaged shell is generally not a viable option and usually warping cannot be detected until you relocate the hot tub and refill it where upon it will start rocking as it is not level.
Hot tub controls inspection
Operate the hot tubs controls, switch through each function and mode and make sure everything is operating as it should be. This includes the operation of jets, pump speeds, lighting, air valve, diverter valve, and thermostats and any other settings that are available. If they are not working correctly then have the seller to have the spa serviced before you will buy. It is estimated when buying a used spa hot tub that it will need a call out within one year of purchase and this can be a costly business because call out charges can be expensive even for the most mundane tasks.
Check for noises in the control system a continuous chattering sound could be from defective relay contactors. Like a car ask to see the repair and maintenance manual and check that an owner’s manual is also available.
Jets inspection
Verify each jets function and make sure the flow and direction can adjust properly.
Pump & Motor inspection
Pumps and motors are stored in a compartment, open the compartment door and check for leaks or puddles of water. Pump seals may be leaking and can be expensive to repair. Motors and pumps should not have any abnormal noise when starting up and running. If you hear anything unusual you may have problems with bearings or worse shafts and impellors may have a problem. Again they can be expensive to repair or replace.
Heating System inspection
Check the water temperature digital readout is correct by using you own thermometer in the water. If the temperature will not reach the operating parameters then there may be a problem with the heaters.
Other things that need close inspection include air blowers, ozone purification system, foam insulation, wood rot, check for tripping of electrical items. Remember any electrical repairs need to be carried out by a qualified electrician.
After inspection you will need to move the hot tub from the sellers place to your own location. There is no free delivery like with a new hot tub and you may have to hire a flat bed truck to move it. You may also need 5 or six people to load it because of the hot tubs weight.
Decontamination and sanitisation.
It is very important to thoroughly decontaminate and sanitize a used spa before use. They may look clean but can harbour mould, fungus, bacteria, viruses and algae deep within the plumbing systems, and all recesses. There are specialised system flushes that can be used for the cleaning purpose.
As well as a cleaning process new filters and chemical kits will also have to be purchased, old filters should be changed and discarded.
Before you consider a used hot tub sale there are a lot of decisions to be made. If you do not feel competent in inspecting used spa hot tubs then you should ask someone who is more familiar with the process to accompany you.
